A New School Year Starts at KiHS on Sept 8nd!

Hello and welcome to the KiHS site.
On September 8nd a new school school year begins at KiHS! The teachers are now busy at an orientation session in Balmertown as they prepared for the busy weeks ahead in the program. KiHS is into its 9th year of operation and the success has been continuing in the positive direction since the start. KiHS offers a full grade 9 and 10 program as well as compulsory courses in grade 11 and 2. We are anticipating this to be a record year again as we introduce more programs to help lead the students to success.
Grade 9 and 10 Academic Courses
This year at KiHS, we are offering a grade 9 and 10 academic program for the students who wish to begin an pathway towards university. This is probably one of a very few opportunities for students in the northern communities to take academic programming while in their home communities. Please contact our office today if you would like to take advantage of this, or have your principal or education director contact us.
Virtues Project
At KiHS we believe in make deliberate efforts to educate the whole student. We are continuing with promoting the development of virtues in students and staff this year with the virtues project. This project highlights virtues that are valued and honourable in all cultures. We give students examples of how to demonstrate these virtues and celebrate when we see evidence. Please ask a KiHS staff member for more information.
Traditional Programs
This year we are going to be doing some traditional activities in our partner classrooms. Teachers have all been given information and direction as to what are some possibilities to plan for their students while getting community members involved. Please contact your KiHS teacher if you have any ideas.
PLAR Assessments
We are partnering with the Adulat Learning Centre in Thunder Bay to offer older mature students who are 18 years old or older and have been out of school for at least one year, the chance to get their pathway on track to complete their diploma.
Special Education
We have hired a special education teacher to travel around our partner communities and begin inofrmal assessments of our students and provide support where identified and needed.
Online secondary education is taking off all across North America and KiHS has been a leader in developing a model which is working for students in our First Nation communities. KiHS is an online program which allows students to earn valuable secondary credits while remaining in their home community. Many feel this is very important in that it allows for direct community, parental, and cultural involvement at a natural and needed level. Students are earning valuable skills and adding to the rich technical base in their communities and in doing so getting closer to a high school diploma.
If you would like any additional information regarding KiHS, please contact me at the administration office in Balmertown. KiHS may be just the place you need to help you find a way to complete your credits for your Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Please continue to check out our website and the option sheet for this year and if there are courses which could work for you, make sure you call for more information.
KiHS offers an opportunity for students in any community to take high school credits as an independent student if there is no KiHS program in your community. Call to ask about this....it may be the opportunity you need to get that DIPLOMA!
